About this and that, mainly the history of King’s Lynn.
I am a retired professional spending my time reading, especially about the history and heritage of my home town, King’s Lynn.
I’ve been playing with words in a variety of ways all my life, and I’ve found that writing helps me make sense of material. I hope you find it worth your while too.
I have tried to give an overview of the history of King’s Lynn covering a wide range of topics, including:
- Prominent historical figures associated with King’s Lynn, such as Bishop Herbert de Losinga, Eugene Aram, Margery Kempe, John Wesley
- Significant events that took place in the town (or nearby), like the Siege of King’s Lynn during the English Civil War, the building of Castle Rising, and the First and Second Battles of Lincoln.
- Unique aspects of King’s Lynn’s history, such as its medieval street names, the Leaning Tower of the Franciscan Friary, and the town’s connection to the Hanseatic League.
- Darker episodes in King’s Lynn’s past, including allegations of witchcraft, public executions, and instances of smuggling and criminal activity.
- The town’s architectural and cultural heritage, including landmarks like Holy Trinity Guildhall, St George’s Guildhall, Thoresby College, St Nicholas’ Chapel, and the Red Mount Chapel.
I have drawn on a wealth of historical sources to create a multifaceted picture of King’s Lynn’s evolution over the centuries, attempting to weave together engaging stories.
I am not perfect, so if you think I have got it wrong, do let me know.
